The goal of this technical presentation is to explore some the issues related to the development of the world’s we have built in St Michaels , Chestertown, Easton, Queen Anne’s County (Maryland),  the Revolutionary era Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment (New Jersey), and worlds we are envisioning building.  Middle/high school students, college students and staff at Washington College have been working on and exploring software tools to create community visualizations for the past four years.  Starting with the utilization of Google Sketch-up and ESRI’s ArcScene, work in this arena has progressed to using different software tools such as Google Earth, GeoWeb3D, exploration of tools such as Autodesk 3DS Max, Blender, Maya, Photoshop, and the investigation of unique virtual world and gaming platforms such as Second Life, Open Sim Metaverse and Unity to fully engage the target audience. Other tools such as Camtasia Studio, Adobe After Effects, and Vegas Platinum Studio used to make animations will also be discussed.  Along this road of discovery many obstacles have been encountered, and some overcome.

Learning Objectives:

  • Become familiar with many software tools used to build virtual worlds and 3D animations.
  • Learn some of the key technical obstacles inherent with these tools.
  • Envision what you could do with these tools in your school.
